Vision:
To feed a healthy meal to anyone who is hungry, and to act as a
resource center to direct people to the agency that can help them.
Mission:
To create a collaborative relationship with other churches, organizations, and individuals
who will help fulfill the vision.
In 2010, Lincoln Park United Methodist Church started a TV Dinner Ministry. This consisted of serving TV dinners to anyone
who was hungry and we ended up serving an average of 35 TV dinners a week. Then one day, Catholic Charities reached out
because they wanted to open a Soup Kitchen on the South side of Flint. After much discussion with Catholic Charities and
several church council meetings with the members of Lincoln Park UMC, it was decided to begin a collaborative relationship
with Catholic Charities to open a soup kitchen in the basement of the church. On January 11, 2011, we held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the first day of the South Flint Soup Kitchen.
In January 2012, we collaborated with several other churches who would serve a pancake breakfast on Saturday once a month. We now have a pancake breakfast served every Saturday of each month. We serve a healthy meal 27 days a month. We average serving around 31,000 meals a year. We also serve as a resource center where we can direct people to other organizations for additional services.
At the beginning of June 2020, Pastor Maurice Horne, after many years of service to the south Flint community, decided to transition into a different role and left the South Flint Soup Kitchen. Asbury Community Development Corporation (Asbury CDC), decided to take on this new venture of operating the South Flint Soup Kitchen and in collaboration with their new Senior Program Manager, Katelin Maylum, they started expanding services at SFSK. We now boast an Angel Closet where clients can get new/like new clothing, household goods, school supplies, seasonal items and more and a monthly Food Giveaway utilizing items from our pantry. We are looking into starting programming and adding more fun community events to enrich our community and to not only energize our clients, but to allow them to share their own unique gifts and talents.
During the Coronavirus pandemic, we began serving take-out lunches and putting new safety measures into effect to assure our clients, volunteers and staff are staying safe. All volunteers are required to have a temperature check and wear a mask upon arrival. We have masks for clients as well if they are in need of one. We are also following social distancing guidelines according to the CDC and we have a drop box for clients to have contactless food delivery. It's just more ways we here at South Flint Soup Kitchen show our appreciation and love for our community!
